Women are starting and running new businesses at virtually the same rate as men for the first time, while one in five entrepreneurs are non-white, according to new analysis of entrepreneurship activity in Scotland.

Akcela Ventures, Norwich’s only startup incubator,  has been awarded a £110,000 grant. The funding has been secured as part of the Ecosystem Partnership Programme, a joint initiative between Norfolk and Suffolk County Councils, Connected Innovation and Barclays Eagle Labs to boost support for the region’s digital technology sector.

BetaDen, the award-winning Worcestershire-based organisation providing support for innovative technology-based businesses, has welcomed the first intake of start-up technology and digital businesses to its new incubator programme, delivered in partnership with Barclays Eagle Labs and Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership. 

Catalyst has announced the finalists of INVENT 2024, the leading competition for aspiring innovators and entrepreneurs in Northern Ireland. The University of Liverpool has become a founding shareholder in a spin-in company which has been formed to take forward technology for use in the insurance and financial sectors. Intellegri, an established company led by insurance industry experts, will spin-in to the University of Liverpool to commercialise software developed by Professor Simon Maskell, from the School of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science.

Social entrepreneurs with transformative enterprises are being urged to enter a new funding competition which will culminate in a glamorous pitching event at The Shard.

Designed to drive positive social change, Ignite is being launched by the Ford Family Foundation and is supported by leading UK universities, including Durham. The overall winner will receive a £20,000 impact accelerator grant to scale up their social enterprise, with a further £30,000 being shared between the other four finalists.
